Dental diseases are extremely common in dogs. You can prevent them by taking some simple steps for your dog’s dental hygiene.
Start when your pet is young. Brush his teeth daily. Occasionally take him to the vet for a professional cleaning of his mouth.
Ask your vet for a suitable toothbrush and toothpaste for your dog. Start by offering a taste of the toothpaste to your dog. Once he accepts it, start cleaning his teeth with the brush. Periodontal disease is most common on the upper back teeth. Plaque buildup occurs here on a daily basis. So this is the area you need to focus on when cleaning your dog’s teeth.
Brushing under the gum line is most important since this is where plaque builds up.
Clean the upper teeth first. Try to get under the gum line. Move from back to forward, making small circles with the brush. Gradually move to the lower teeth and the entire mouth. The process could take you and your pet some time to get used to. So it is best to be patient.
Make the teeth brushing a daily routine. Pick out one time of the day. This will help your dog get used to the idea of brushing. After cleaning his teeth, take him out or praise him. It will act as a positive reinforcement and your dog will actually start to enjoy it.
