Housebreaking your pet is very important. It is especially important if you have a cat. The first few days for a cat in its new house are crucial if you are to develop a lasting relationship.

You should have a confinement room prepared before you bring the cat home. If this is not possible, use your bathroom. Place some food and water, a small bed and a scratching post in the room. Remove all furniture from the room. This is because you do not want your cat to use the furniture as a scratching post.

When you first bring your cat home, take him directly to the confined room. Try and relax him by saying soothing words. Call out to him softly if he is anxious or restless. Help him get acquainted with the room. Show him his meal and let him eat. Let him go to sleep when he feels like it.  Do not allow too many people near him, as it will frighten him. If possible, play some soft music. If you have any other pets, try and introduce the new cat to them. It will take some time for the other pets to accept the new member.

Remember that animals carry many sources of infections. Wash your hands before and after handling him. Take him to a vet soon for a routine medical check-up.

Housebreaking is a great bonding experience for you with your new pet. Over time, your new pet will accept you as its master and begin to show affection.
