The goal of socialization is to make your dog adapt to different people and places. Your dog should be able to show appropriate behavior at any place or time.
Until the time a puppy is about 12 weeks old, he is very receptive to what you teach him. He will learn to behave properly in the presence of different people. The process of socialization should be gradual; otherwise your puppy might get scared. The rate of learning also varies from puppy to puppy.
Ask your vet about any socialization classes that you can take your puppy to. Also ask him what the best time is to take him to such a class. The benefit of taking your puppy to a socialization class is that he will interact with other pets and pet owners. Start by introducing your puppy to a small group of animals. Gradually, introduce him to larger groups.
Allow your dog to be exposed to new situations and people. You need to develop a positive association between every new event and your dog. This can be done by convincing him that the new thing or person is harmless. Play with him and reward him. Give him plenty of praise. If he reacts unfavorably to anything, ignore it. It is part of the learning process.
It must be remembered that socialization is a long drawn process. there is never an end to the socialization period. The more things your pet learns, the better he will be able to handle new situations.
