Fleas live in the skin of cats and dogs. They feed on the blood of your pet. If your pet scratches constantly, he probably has fleas. Fleas can also live in your home in dark and humid corners.

Fleas can cause allergic reaction in the animal’s skin. If your pet bites his tail or back, it is probably due to fleas. Other symptoms can be itching, weakness and lethargy. Check your pet’s skin for fleas. The skin of flea infected pets has flea feces. These are in the form of small, black flecks. Add a drop of water to these flecks. If they are due to fleas, they will turn red because they contain blood.

You can run a comb through your pet’s fur. Check if the comb contains any fleas or flea dirt. If your pet has fleas, you need to treat it after consulting a vet.

Wash your pet’s bedding and change it every few days. This will prevent fleas from multiplying in your pet’s skin. Your vet will be able to prescribe you some medicines to eradicate fleas. Frontline medication is an insecticide that is commonly given for dog fleas. Pro- spot is a larvicidal cream that can be applied on your dog’ skin. Use gloves when applying this product. Consult your vet about the proper dosage.

For cats, different medications are used. Program is a product used for cats. It acts by interrupting the flea life cycle. Do not use products meant for dogs on cats, and vice versa.
