Dogs can recognize different tones of the human voice. You can use this knowledge to communicate with your dog and train him. Dogs can also understand certain body language positions.
Use a high pitched tone when teaching your dog to come to you. Use his name and command him to come. If he does not respond the first time, use a treat to attract him. Show him the treat as you call him and give it to him when he obeys you.
You can teach your dog to walk beside you. Use the command ‘heel’ for this purpose. As you step forward, give him the command. When you stop, give him the command again. If he does not stop, give his leash a gentle tug. Practice this many times. Eventually the dog will learn to walk and stop with you.
You can teach your dog other simple commands like ‘down’ and ‘stay’. If you want to stop him in his tracks, use the command ‘stay’ and put your hand in front of his face. You can also step right in front of him. If you want him to stop attacking a stranger, use the command ‘down’. While giving him the command, put your palm open slightly above his head. You can also push him down gently if he does not obey.
Use eye contact with your dog. Use a loving look if you want to praise him. Give him a serious look if you want to scold him. Dogs interpret these signs even though you may not be aware of it.
